Sewer and water line replacement in Calgary

The two jobs most Calgary homeowners only face once. Both are done to City of Calgary permit and inspection standard, trenchless wherever the line allows it.

An excavated trench in a Calgary back yard exposing an old clay sewer line being replaced with new PVC pipe

Sewer line replacement

Collapsed, root-blocked or back-pitched sewer lines replaced end to end. Most older Calgary homes still run on clay or cast iron that has outlived its design life.

  • Camera inspection before any digging, so you see the actual fault
  • Trenchless pipe bursting where the run allows it
  • City of Calgary permit and inspection handled
  • Yard, driveway and sidewalk put back the way it was found

Water main replacement

Leaking, corroded or undersized water service lines replaced from the property line to the house, buried below Calgary's frost depth so it survives the winter.

  • Lead, galvanized and undersized lines upgraded to modern pipe
  • Pressure problems traced before you pay to replace anything
  • Permit, locates and City inspection coordinated
  • Emergency response when a main lets go

Does your Calgary home need the line replaced?

A camera inspection answers it in an hour. These are the signs that usually bring people to the phone.

  • Repeat backupsSnaking the same drain more than once or twice a year means the pipe, not the clog, is the problem.
  • Tree rootsMature elms and poplars in Calgary's older neighbourhoods find every joint in a clay sewer line.
  • Clay or cast ironHomes built before the 1970s often still run original pipe that is well past its service life.
  • Sinkholes or wet patchesSoft ground or an unusually green strip across the yard often traces a leaking line.
  • Pressure droppingFalling water pressure with no fixture to blame points at a corroded or undersized service line.
  • Spiking water billA bill that climbs with no change in habits is often an underground leak on your side of the property line.

Trenchless pipe bursting

A new pipe is pulled through the path of the old one from two small access pits. Your lawn, driveway and mature trees stay where they are, and most jobs finish in a day. It needs a line that still runs where it should, so the camera inspection comes first.

Open excavation

The trench is dug, the line is replaced and the ground is restored. It is the answer when a line has collapsed, lost its grade or has to move. It takes longer and disturbs more, but nothing else works on a pipe that is no longer there.

Who pays in Calgary?

In Calgary the property owner is generally responsible for the water and sewer service lines running from the property line to the building, while the City looks after the mains in the street. That means a failure on your side of the line is your bill, and worth confirming with the City before work starts.

Permits and frost depth

Service line work in Calgary needs a City permit and inspection, and utility locates before anyone digs. Water lines have to sit below local frost depth so they survive a Calgary winter. I arrange the permit, the locates and the inspection as part of the job.

A Calgary plumber who finishes the job

At Your Service PHD is a Calgary plumbing, heating and gas business working out of Forest Lawn SE. The work I am known for is the big underground stuff most homeowners only face once: sewer line replacement, water main replacement and trenchless repair, on homes and commercial properties across the city.

A sewer or water line replacement is a serious amount of money, so nothing gets quoted off a guess. The camera goes down the line first, you see what I see, and the quote follows the evidence. If a trenchless pull will do the job, that is what I recommend, because it is cheaper for you and leaves your yard alone.

The heating side has not gone anywhere. Furnaces, boilers and tankless water heaters still make up a good share of the week, and emergency call-outs are answered seven days.

Common questions

Who is responsible for the sewer line in Calgary, me or the City?

As a general rule in Calgary the property owner owns the water and sewer service lines from the property line to the building, and the City looks after the mains in the street. So a break on your side of the property line is normally your cost. It is worth confirming with the City for your specific address before any work begins, and I can help you do that.

What does sewer line replacement cost in Calgary?

It depends on the length of the run, the depth, what the pipe is made of, and whether the line can be burst trenchless or has to be dug. That is why I camera the line before quoting rather than giving a number over the phone. You get a written quote based on what the camera actually shows.

What is trenchless pipe bursting?

A new pipe is pulled along the path of the old one from two small access pits, splitting the old pipe outward as it goes. Your lawn, driveway and mature trees stay put and most jobs finish in a day. It needs a line that still follows its original path, so the camera inspection decides whether it is an option.

How long does a water main replacement take?

A straightforward residential water service replacement is usually a one to two day job once the permit and utility locates are in hand. Longer runs, deep lines, or work under a driveway or sidewalk add time. I give you the expected timeline with the quote.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Water and sewer service line work in Calgary requires a City permit and an inspection, and utility locates have to be done before anyone digs. I arrange the permit, the locates and the inspection as part of the job.

What areas do you cover?

Greater Calgary, all four quadrants, plus Airdrie, Chestermere, Okotoks and Cochrane. If you're not sure you're in range, give me a call.

When are you available?

Every day of the week, all day, by appointment. Emergency call-outs are available too.

Do you work on commercial properties?

Yes. I take on both home and commercial projects.

Sewer backing up? Main let go?

Camera inspection first, written quote second. Emergency call-outs 7 days a week across Calgary.
